  • Medicina Scarlett, a bilingual medical service provider, celebrates its grand opening as the 168th Motor City Match business
  • Founded by Scarlett Idema, a native Spanish speaker, Medicina Scarlett was created to help Idema bridge the gap between language barriers and health literacy
  • Medicina Scarlett provides accessible, bilingual, and high-quality medical care to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of socioeconomic status or insurance coverage.
  • Motor City Match has awarded $18.1M in cash grants; 81% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses, 69% are women-owned and 64% are owned by Detroit residents
  • JUNE 25, 2024 (DETROIT) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) today marked the grand opening of Medicina Scarlett, a bilingual medical service provider and the latest Motor City Match grant recipient to open a brick-and-mortar. The medical service provider was established to meet the healthcare needs of its diverse community, where a reported 29,485 households speak Spanish as their primary language, according to Data USA.

Founded by board-certified family nurse practitioner, Scarlett Idema, Medicina Scarlett is Idema’s way of building medical trust and serving the health and well-being needs of the Southwest Detroit community. As Idema notes, many cultural and social aspects can impact health and healthcare; at present, 90 percent of the patients being seen are Spanish-speaking.

“One of the reasons I opened this clinic is because I’m an NP and have been working in the area – the need is here. I speak Spanish; I can identify with this community and understand their struggles as an immigrant myself,” said Idema. “To me, the keyword is “access” – access to healthcare and knowing what is wrong with you are the first steps to health.”

Idema had the idea for Medicina Scarlett in 2022. After working for other medical practices in the area, she realized the community needed more personalized, holistic medical services. According to Idema, there is “sick medicine,” where you receive care when something has happened to you, or prevention care, which she prefers to provide.

“I think being able to help and understand the culture helps me treat them better,” said Idema. “I wanted different care for the patients that I see and having my own practice allows me to do that.”

Located at 8631 W. Vernor, the 2,100-square-foot facility offers convenient patient access. Medicina Scarlett plans to introduce in-house laboratory and pharmacy services later this year. These additions aim to reduce medical costs for patients, said Idema.

“I’m so proud of Scarlett making it her mission to offer quality medical care in a location that is close to where a lot of people live, but even more so because she is making it accessible and welcoming to the many Spanish-speaking residents in southwest Detroit,” said Duggan. “This is just another example of how Motor City Match is helping to build stronger neighborhoods.”

The business received a $50,000 grant from Motor City Match to support construction costs and the purchase of medical equipment. Medicina Scarlett currently has three bilingual staff members from the same community it serves.

“Scarlett’s passion for the health and well-being of Southwest Detroit’s residents is inspiring,” said Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at the DEGC, which manages the Motor City Match program. “Medicina Scarlett is strategically addressing issues of healthcare availability, affordability and trust in its community, which is beneficial for the city of Detroit as a whole.”

  • New Detroit ventures include a childcare center, multimedia production studio, mini market selling household goods and multiple cafes and restaurants specializing in different cuisines.
  • In Round 25, 81% are minority-owned businesses; 71% are women-owned businesses; and 68% are businesses owned by Detroit residents.
  • Since doubling its grant funding thanks to funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) in August 2022, more than $17.1 million in grants have been awarded through the program to new and existing businesses.
  • JANUARY 23, 2024 (DETROIT) – Mayor Mike Duggan and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) awarded more than $1.2 million in grants to support 23 Detroit businesses in Round 25 of Motor City Match. The grants will support the opening of nearly two dozen new storefronts in the city of Detroit.

The twenty-three new businesses will be located across 19 Detroit neighborhoods, including Cadillac Heights, Sherwood Forest, Eastern Market, Bagley and New Center (full list below). The latest group of Motor City Match recipients include an assortment of businesses and services, including a childcare center, multimedia production studio, a mini market selling household essentials and several restaurants showcasing diverse cuisines like Filipino food.

“Motor City Match continues to help new entrepreneurs transform neighborhood commercial districts throughout our city,” said Mayor Duggan. “In this round alone, residents in nearly 20 individual neighborhoods will have new goods and services accessible near their homes.”

Program granted new life through federal dollars

In addition to the $1.2 million in grants to help the 23 new brick-and-mortar businesses open, eight existing small businesses were awarded a total of $171,800 to make physical improvements to their existing space, bringing the total investment into small businesses in this round to $1.4 million.

“This funding is helping propel 23 Detroit businesses forward as they grow their companies and make their entrepreneurial dreams happen. But even more, this investment supports the bigger picture – it contributes to making Detroit a vibrant, economically strong city that we all care deeply about,” said DEGC President and CEO Kevin Johnson. “The DEGC remains dedicated to nurturing a thriving business community here in Detroit, and we can’t wait to see the positive changes these grants will spark in our neighborhoods.”

A major source of funding for Motor City Match grants is President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The injection of ARPA dollars has enabled the program to double its quarterly grant awards to $1 million per round, assisting even more entrepreneurs in renovating and revitalizing their spaces. Since Round 20, this influx of $8 million has empowered local business owners to pursue their aspirations while uplifting the wider Detroit community. By leveraging the federal funding, Motor City Match continues opening doors for small businesses across the city.

The program also offered awards to 52 more entrepreneurs in its Business Plan, Develop and Design tracks in addition to the grants. These awards offer essential support for Detroit businesses still working on their projects, including business services, training and one-on-one advising.

In total, 83 Detroit businesses representing five council districts received support from Motor City Match’s 25th round.

“Each year the DEGC through Motor City Match continues to expand its reach by tapping new businesses and entrepreneurs within various markets and industries to grow and support our small business community,” said Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield. “This program continues to assist the creative and innovative business owners in Detroit who have a vision for their communities and understand the important role small businesses play in creating and developing strong ties to our residents and neighborhoods.”

Since 2015, Motor City Match has awarded more than 2,000 businesses, resulting in 165 new brick-and-mortar businesses currently operating throughout the city.

Motor City Match continues to grow Detroit’s small-business landscape
Combined with its other small business programming, DEGC is creating a sustainable small business environment that nurtures new concepts and ideas. Motor City Match offers business owners a wide range of assistance in five tracks Plan, Develop, Design, Cash and Restore. The program helps Detroit entrepreneurs plan, formalize, and launch their business by providing business planning classes, site-selection assistance, financial planning, legal aid, design services and gap funding.

    ● Former NBA athletes and siblings, Joe Crawford and Jordan Crawford, open family business that’s a coffee shop by day and a speakeasy by night

    ● The facility also transforms into a stylish bar and event space that can accommodate 75 people

    ● CRED Café marks the 165th MCM business to open

    ● Motor City Match has awarded $15.7M in cash grants; 82% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses and 71% are women-owned

DECEMBER 6, 2023 (DETROIT) — Detroit welcomes the latest Motor City Match small business, CRED Café, as Mayor Mike Duggan and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) gathered to celebrate the new Rivertown establishment with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Owned and operated by the Crawford family, the café is a coffee shop, speakeasy and event space all in one.

By day, patrons can enjoy a selection of pastries, snacks and an array of fresh coffee options sourced from Coffee Uplifts People, a java company owned by radio personality Angela Yee. By night, a hidden door leads to a speakeasy reminiscent of prohibition-era establishments. The bar lounge and event space, accommodating around 75 people, further enhance the cafe’s versatility.

Former NBA players and Detroit natives Joe Crawford and Jordan Crawford conceived the idea for CRED Café after encountering cafe-bar fusion establishments during their professional basketball travels abroad. Noting a lack of similar spaces in Detroit, the Crawford brothers pitched the idea of transforming their family-owned event space into such a cafe to their parents and younger brother.

Their mother, Sylvia Crawford, recalls driving her boys to school discussing Detroit’s comeback and instilling a desire in her family to contribute to the city’s resurgence. Those words became reality and the Crawfords are now helping to fuel their hometown’s revival.

“Our story is one of passion, commitment and a genuine desire to contribute to Detroit’s growth,” said Mrs. Crawford, who also serves as the cafe’s president and CEO. “We started with a dream and transformed a vacant, blighted building into a multifaceted space that reflects the spirit of our community.”

CRED Cafe’s commitment extends to the employment of Detroit residents, with all staff members hailing from the city. The establishment also partnered with several Detroit-based contractors on the build-out of their new space.

“Today represents more than just the opening of a beautiful new neighborhood business inside what used to be a vacant building along E. Jefferson,” said Mayor Duggan. “It represents how individuals like Joe and Jordan who have achieved success at the highest levels outside of Detroit and Michigan are coming back home to reinvest in the city that raised them. I’m so proud of what they have done with CRED Cafe and I just know the community will support them.”

The establishment, located at 6340 E. Jefferson Ave., received a $60,000 grant from Motor City Match which assisted with renovations and the purchase of equipment.

“From morning coffee to evening cocktails and everything between, there is always something happening at CRED Cafe,” said Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at the DEGC, responsible for managing the Motor City Match program. “Those conversations years ago as Momma Sylvia drove her boys to school, cultivating their dream of uplifting Detroit, have truly blossomed. Now we all get to be part of the special community space this ambitious family has created right here in our amazing city.”

  • Michigan & Trumbull Pizza received a $55,000 grant from Motor City Match, marking the 164th MCM business to open
  • Motor City Match has awarded $15.7M in cash grants; 82% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses and 71% are women-owned
  • NOVEMBER 20, 2023 (DETROIT) — Detroit’s culinary landscape expands with the grand opening of Michigan & Trumbull Pizza, a community-backed pizzeria delivering Detroit-style pizza with a twist. Located in the Elijah McCoy neighborhood, Michigan & Trumbull Pizza is set to become a local favorite for quality food enthusiasts and city dwellers alike. Founders and couple Nate Peck and Kristen Calverley, welcomed Mayor Mike Duggan, City officials and pizza fans to commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the 164th Motor City Match business to open.

Michigan & Trumbull Pizza’s journey began in Pittsburgh, where Peck and Calverley identified a gap in the market for authentic Detroit-style pizza. Relocating to Detroit in 2012, they started experimenting with recipes, blending traditional techniques with inventive flavor combinations. The result is a menu that pays homage to the city’s pizza heritage while offering unexpected twists on classic favorites.

After opening their first Motor City Match-supported location in January 2020, the difficult economic conditions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic compelled them to shut down. However, Peck and Calverley continued their vision of owning a community-focused eatery where locals could unite over great pizza. Undeterred, they secured their current location in the Elijah McCoy neighborhood and set out to resurrect their beloved restaurant. The new location strategically positions itself in a thriving neighborhood, adjacent to the Dreamtroit mixed-use development apartments. Just four blocks away, it aligns with the transformative $3 billion development plans announced by Henry Ford Health, Tom Gores & Detroit Pistons, and Michigan State University in Detroit’s New Center.

“We faced difficulties, but we’re determined to keep our prices reasonable for Detroiters,” said Calverley. “Our success is a testament to the community’s support, and we’re excited to continue serving our unique Detroit-style pizza to the neighborhood.”

After being awarded a $55,000 grant from Motor City Match, Peck and Calverley were able to use the funds to extensively renovate and equip their new location. As Detroit residents themselves, the two are dedicated to employing local talent.

“Congratulations to Nate and Kristen on the grand opening of Michigan & Trumbull Pizza at this great new location, which within the next few years is going to be completely reimagined into a vibrant and walkable community with hundreds of new jobs and residents,” said Duggan. “We’re glad Michigan & Trumbull Pizza is back on the map after persevering through the challenges caused by the pandemic, and know it will continue to be a great place for Detroiters and visitors alike to gather for delicious Detroit-style pizza.”

Michigan & Trumbull Pizza’s commitment to the community goes beyond the kitchen. The pizzeria actively supports local organizations by donating a percentage of proceeds to various community-focused organizations, including the Empowerment Program, Pope Francis Center, Detroit Gym and 3D Detroit. Michigan & Trumbull Pizza also offers a special discount for hospital workers to show appreciation for their tireless efforts.

“The Motor City Match program is proud to have supported Michigan & Trumbull Pizza’s journey in contributing to the economic vitality of Detroit,” said Sean Gray, vice president of Small Businesses Services at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, responsible for managing the Motor City Match program. “Nate and Kristen’s success reflects the resilience and vibrancy of Detroit’s small business community. We’re thrilled they’ve decided to reopen in Detroit and eagerly anticipate their success and positive impact in the community.”

  • Specializing in quality men’s fashion, MATURE clothing highlights the importance of showing up for yourself
  • The Lifestyle Clothier’s “Suited for the Future” initiative provides free tailored suits, mentorship and networking opportunities for high school boys to continue on path towards excellence post-graduation
  • MATURE is the 163rd Motor City Match business to open
  • Motor City Match has awarded $15.7M in cash grants; 82% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses and 71% are women-owned
  • OCTOBER 31, 2023 (DETROIT) — Detroit welcomed another new business to its local retail scene as MATURE, a casual and contemporary men’s lifestyle clothier, celebrated its grand opening. Founders and siblings Darryl Humes Jr. and Koven Humes were joined by Mayor Mike Duggan, Motor City Match officials and community supporters for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store’s new brick-and-mortar location in New Center. The opening marks the 163rd for Motor City Match and comes on the heels of the initiative’s 24th round of awards earlier this week.

MATURE brings a fresh perspective to fashion retail with its carefully curated selection of apparel, accessories and home goods tailored to the modern man. In 2017, the Humes brothers launched MATURE to fill a void they saw in the local men’s fashion scene, which needed more options catering to the diverse tastes of today’s gentlemen. Since its founding, the boutique has established itself as a destination for distinctive style in Detroit for residents, celebrities and superstar athletes.

“What makes us unique is our focus on making clothing interchangeable and event-driven, giving our clients a versatile and tailored experience,” said Darryl. “Each item serves multiple purposes so clients can mix, match and transition effortlessly from work to weekend.”

The boutique also blends its family legacy with a passion for fashion in Detroit. The Humes brothers were inspired by their late father’s love of menswear. This family legacy, combined with their understanding of consumer behavior, drives their success.

MATURE’s new space, supported by a $30,000 grant from Motor City Match, allows for a more personalized shopping experience. The intimate boutique setting lets the Humes brothers provide customized styling consultations to help clients build versatile, real-life wardrobes.

“What Darryl and Koven have created to continue their father’s legacy in the men’s fashion market here on Grand Boulevard is just beautiful and should be a great success,” said Mayor Duggan. “The team at Motor City Match has done a fantastic job supporting small businesses like MATURE, which are bringing high-quality goods and services back to neighborhoods across the city of Detroit.”

But their commitment to the community doesn’t stop at clothing. The brothers are the brains behind “Suited for the Future,” an initiative to recognize and support young men excelling in academics and their communities.

“For us, Detroit is more than just a place to do business; it’s our roots, our origin. Our late father instilled in us a passion for menswear and excellence,” said Darryl. “We wanted to start right here in Detroit, giving back to the community that raised us. Our ‘Suited For the Future’ initiative is one way we celebrate excellence and invest in our city’s future.”

  • $300K also distributed to help 14 existing small businesses make building improvements
  • Motor City Match fuels small biz growth, from a performing arts center and luxury wardrobe rental service to the country’s first hybrid infrared movement studio and bone broth bar
  • In Round 24, 81% are minority-owned businesses; 71% are women-owned businesses; and 68% are businesses owned by Detroit residents
  • Since receiving additional ARPA funding, more than $6.5 million in grants have been awarded through the program to new and existing businesses
  • OCTOBER 30, 2023 (DETROIT) – Mayor Mike Duggan and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) awarded $1.1 million in grants to 19 new small businesses that will soon open in Detroit, thanks to the Motor City Match program.

The 19 new businesses will be located across 18 Detroit neighborhoods, including Mexicantown, University District, Milwaukee-Junction, Bagley and Central Southwest. Among the new ventures receiving grants through Round 24 of Motor City Match are a performing arts center, the country’s very first hybrid infrared movement studio and bone broth bar, a medical office and a wide range of cafes and restaurants.

In addition to the $1.1 million in grants to help the 19 new brick-and-mortar businesses open, 14 existing small businesses were awarded a total of $303,000 to make physical improvements to their existing space, bringing the total investment into small businesses in this round to $1.4 million.

“When we started Motor City Match in 2015, people told me we wouldn’t get enough people interested in opening new businesses in Detroit to justify even one round of the program,” said Mayor Duggan. “Today, demand is only growing and 24 rounds later, more than 160 new small businesses have opened and nearly 20 more will open soon in 18 different neighborhoods through this round alone.”

Small business growth fueled by influx of ARPA funds

A significant portion of the funding for the grants is coming from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).  The ARPA funding has helped Motor City Match to double the number of grants it awards each quarter to $1 million per round, helping the program to help more entrepreneurs renovate and revitalize their spaces. Since Round 20, over $6.5 million has gone towards helping local business owners pursue their dreams and uplift the community.

“This influx of support demonstrates the transformative impact strategic investments can have in energizing a city’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said DEGC President and CEO Kevin Johnson. “With the continuity of programs like Motor City Match, Detroit’s resilient business community has a bright future ahead.”

The program also offered awards to 53 more entrepreneurs in its Business Plan, Develop and Design tracks in addition to the grants. These awards offer essential support for Detroit businesses still working on their projects, including business services, design and architectural support, training and one-on-one advising.

In total, 86 Detroit businesses representing all seven council districts received support from Motor City Match’s 24th round.

Since 2015, Motor City Match has awarded more than 1,936 businesses, resulting in 162 new brick & mortar businesses operating throughout the city.

Through 24 rounds of the program:

    • Total business open: 162
    • Total businesses under construction: 106
    • Total cash grants: $15.7 million
    • Total leveraged investment: $87.4 million

Detroit’s art scene gets a boost with Motor City Match grant for beloved community art gallery https://www.motorcitymatch.com/2023/10/detroits-art-scene-gets-a-boost-with-motor-city-match-grant-for-beloved-community-art-gallery/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 21:04:07 +0000 https://www.motorcitymatch.com/?p=166151

Founded over 30 years ago, Mac Galleries has become a hub for local artists and a place for the arts to thrive and inspire.

The gallery takes pride in actively participating in mentorship programs to foster growth for local artists of all ages

Motor City Match awarded two grants for the business totaling $85,000 for the business to undergo building renovations

Mac Galleries is the 162nd Motor City Match business to open

Motor City Match has awarded $15.7M in cash grants; 82% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses and 71% are women-owned

OCTOBER 26, 2023 (DETROIT) —Mac Galleries, a Detroit-based art gallery with over three decades of elevating the local arts, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new space in the Historic Avenue of Fashion. Gallery owner James McKissic was joined by Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison, City officials and community supporters as he cut the ribbon on his new establishment, marking the 162nd brick-and-mortar business to open under Motor City Match.

In 1991, McKissic’s father opened Mac Galleries to build upon his passion for photography and creating customizable frames for his pieces. McKissic, with a fresh perspective gained through a business degree from Howard University, joined his father in business to carry out the family’s artistic legacy and build upon Detroit’s arts and culture scene.

“I believe the City of Detroit realizes that art is an important component into bringing in new residents and attracting new businesses,” said McKissic. “It’s a quality-of-life issue and I think Detroit has embraced art and artists and it just makes for a more vibrant community altogether.”

Mac Galleries offers original and replica artwork from local, national and international artists. More than a gallery, it provides a welcoming space for meaningful dialogue and discovery. The team is passionate about crafting personalized framing solutions and handling art installations with care. Those who can’t make it in person can still explore and purchase from the online collection at MacGalleries.com.

Having outgrown two previous locations in Detroit, McKissic and his family set their sights on a more spacious home for their gallery. This move was driven by their passion for cultivating the city’s next generation of artistic talent.

McKissic, who currently serves as a mentor in the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club, which pairs seasoned artists with emerging talents, dreamed of creating a space for local artists to grow and make a sustainable living. The new gallery promises to be a hub for artists to create, connect and uplift their community.

“It’s not just about my family’s legacy – it’s about all artists,” said McKissic. “We want to let them know they’re not alone and prevent them from learning the hard way.”

McKissic’s vision began taking shape after he secured a $60,000 cash grant from Motor City Match to make vital renovations to his space. Additional financing from Invest Detroit, including a $150,000 small business loan, and another $25,000 grant from the Restore Track of Motor City Match helped enable the gallery’s transformation.

“Motor City Match businesses are adding vibrancy and character of neighborhoods across the city, and Mac Galleries builds on the creative culture that already exists along the Avenue of Fashion,” said Mayor Mike Duggan prior to today’s event. “James McKissic’s beautiful new space will be more than just a place for Detroiters to purchase or frame that next piece of art for their home, it will be a place where artists can collaborate, as well as mentor other aspiring young artists.”

“Invest Detroit is thrilled to support James and his efforts to open a larger space to showcase artists,” said Jason Barnett, Senior Vice President, Lending at Invest Detroit. “Not only is he continuing to grow his family business legacy but is bringing it to the Avenue of Fashion where he can provide a welcoming space for neighborhood residents.”

Mac Galleries is set to host its inaugural exhibition in its new home at 18943 Livernois tomorrow. The show will spotlight uplifting pencil drawings by late local artist Ronald Scarbrough. Scarbrough’s optimistic style resonates with Mac Galleries’ mission to uplift the community through art. By featuring his vivid works first, the gallery is celebrating the talents of Detroit while looking ahead to a bright future in its expanded space.

“Mac Galleries has been a pillar of artistic legacy in Detroit and its enduring commitment to uplifting local talent and bringing people together through art is truly inspirational,” said Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, responsible for overseeing the Motor City Match program. “When we invest in spaces like this, which celebrate inclusion, imagination, and dialogue, we invest in the very soul of our city. We’re proud to see Mac Galleries continue its phenomenal legacy in this vibrant new home.”

  • Hooked on Books Childcare is dedicated to giving children the guidance and care to grow and develop
  • The center offers sensory play, early mathematics, art and more to meet the developmental needs of children
  • Owner Yolanda Massey’s journey with epilepsy led to the creation of the center
  • Hooked on Books Childcare is the 161st Motor City Match business to open
  • Motor City Match has awarded $14.3M in cash grants; 82% of overall winners are minority-owned businesses and 71% are women-owned
  • OCTOBER 4, 2023 (DETROIT) Hooked On Books Childcare celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, City dignitaries and community supporters. The new facility in The Eye neighborhood offers accessible and quality childcare options for families in this revitalizing community.

Hooked On Books Childcare is committed to holistic child development and provides a safe and enriching environment where children can learn, grow and thrive. The center offers a comprehensive range of programs, including sensory play, early mathematics and art, to meet the developmental needs of children from infancy through age 5.

“Opening Hooked on Books Childcare has been a dream come true for me. It’s not just a childcare center; it’s a place where children can grow, learn and thrive in a loving environment,” said owner Yolanda Massey. “I’ve faced my own challenges, and this journey has been about giving back to our community and providing children with the strong foundation they deserve. I’m truly excited to be a part of Detroit and look forward to making a positive impact in the lives of our young ones.”

The center strongly emphasizes nutrition, offering balanced meals and snacks prepared with fresh ingredients. This focus on healthy foods ensures children receive the nutrients they need for optimal growth and development.

“Early childhood education is so critical to developing a child’s full potential and we have a great need for neighborhood centers like Hooked On Books to serve our families,” said Duggan. I am so proud of Yolanda for following her passion to open her new business and Motor City Match for helping her dream come true.”

Massey’s dedication to nutrition arises from a deeply personal journey. Confronted with a diagnosis of epilepsy that led to a pause in her pursuit of a career as an interior designer, she shifted her focus to caring for her nieces and nephews full-time. During this period, she embraced a predominantly plant-based diet to manage her seizures. The transformative impact was undeniable, prompting Massey to weave together her enthusiasm for childcare and nutrition, creating her own daycare.

“With the help of Motor City Match, Ms. Massey is creating another safe space for children to thrive in District 1. Like many Detroiters, Yolanda has been able to turn obstacles into building blocks,” said James Tate, City Council President Pro Tem, District 1. “We are proud of what she has been able to accomplish, and her triumphant story makes her an amazing example to the rest of the community.”

The childcare center, located at 24532 West McNichols, is supported by a $40,000 grant from Motor City Match. The funding helped Massey elevate her services, facilitating the transition from an at-home daycare to a standalone facility with enhanced building renovations. Massey worked with Detroit-based contractors, including Something New Painting and Renovation, LLC. and Detroit Fence Company, to renovate her space.

In the future, Massey has plans to expand her staff and hopes to offer 24-hour childcare for families.

“Yolanda’s journey is truly inspiring, and because of her, we have the creation of an essential service that provides a loving and nurturing environment for children in and around the community,” said Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, responsible for managing the Motor City Match program. “Her establishment underscores the invaluable impact small businesses can have on our neighborhoods.”

East Warren Avenue coming alive following infusion of City, Strategic Neighborhood Fund investment https://www.motorcitymatch.com/2023/09/east-warren-avenue-coming-alive-following-infusion-of-city-strategic-neighborhood-fund-investment/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.motorcitymatch.com/?p=142390
  • Officials, business owners & community members cut ribbon on new streetscape and 3 new Motor City Match businesses on the same day
  • Businesses opening today include a new bookstore and coffee shop, with a new bakery soon to follow
  • New and proposed developments to bring more affordable housing options to East Warren
  • Detroit’s East Warren Avenue corridor comeback took a giant leap forward today as Mayor Mike Duggan joined city officials, community members, philanthropic partners, and business owners to celebrate several major milestones: The completion of a beautiful new $8.8 million streetscape, the opening of two new Motor City Match businesses on that same stretch, and significant progress being made on the construction of a new $8 million, 18-unit affordable housing development. A new bakery – also a Motor City Match winner – is also expected to open on E. Warren later this fall.

Anchoring the revitalization is a $8.8 million streetscape that has made the stretch of East Warren from 3 Mile Drive to Cadieux more attractive, as well as more pedestrian and business-friendly. The 0.6-mile project, which spans the Morningside and East English Village neighborhoods, includes new protected bike lanes, new pavement, and sidewalks, two parking lots, ADA accessibility, improved lighting, and landscaping.

“We’ve seen the same thing happen on Livernois, West McNichols, Grand River and other areas we’ve invested in beautiful new streetscapes to make them more pedestrian friendly,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “They become a magnet for new businesses and new housing, and it may be happening faster on East Warren than it has anywhere.”

Motor City Match and Strategic Neighborhood-funded businesses to open on Corridor

Spurred in part by the physical improvements to East Warren, two new businesses opened their doors today, while a third is expected to open soon.

    • Next Chapter Books is a $50,000 Motor City Match grant winner (Round 23), which officially opened today. Owners Jay and Sarah Williams share a deep love for reading. Sarah, a journalist, and Jay, a historian, found that their shared passion for people’s stories and community could be combined in owning and running a bookstore, bringing them joy. They envisioned their bookstore as a significant community space, one that could host community programming and gatherings.
    • Morningside Cafe is the brainchild of owner Jeff Lewis, who has dedicated the last four years to bringing his vision to life. The cafe’s journey began as an idea and evolved through a series of neighborhood pop-up events before taking root in its physical location at 16369 East Warren. Lewis had expected to open sooner, however, he experienced a major setback on January 4 when a neighboring business caught fire and caused major damage to his property. Despite this challenge, Lewis’ unwavering dedication – along with a $50,000 supplemental Motor City Match grant – has made Morningside Café a shining example of the resilience of small business owners in the face of adversity.
    • Terri’s Cakes received significant support from the Strategic Neighborhood Fund and is a $75,000 Motor City Match grant winner. It is expected to open early next year. Terri Conerway started the business over 50 years ago as a home-based baking endeavor for friends and acquaintances. She was self-taught and passed down her baking knowledge to her daughter. About a decade ago, her daughter, Garnet, took over the business, aiming to realize her vision of an open-concept bakery. Terri’s Cakes specializes in creating cakes for all occasions and serves as the flagship storefront. They also offer delivery services alongside the physical store. The space will be available for event rentals, and there are plans for sponsored events such as game nights and dessert bars.

“It’s moments like this we live for at the DEGC. To witness two business ribbon cuttings in a single day, with another on the horizon, is a testament to the transformative revitalization underway on East Warren,” said Kevin Johnson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, responsible for overseeing the Motor City Match program. “Each of these establishments offers residents distinctive services that will help keep local spending power in the neighborhood.”

    Strategic Neighborhood Fund

Many of these improvements, as well as several others along E. Warren, are being made possible through support from the Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF). The fund, created by Mayor Mike Duggan and Invest Detroit in 2017, provides critical funding for neighborhood small businesses, multi-family housing developments, streetscapes, and park improvements in 10 key neighborhood cluster areas across the city.

In and around East Warren the SNF has provided funding for The Ribbon, Terri’s Cakes and major improvements at Balduck Park.  Plans also have been announced for two other key projects in the SNF area along Warren: The Deco and the Arthur Murray. Both are proposed as mixed-use developments that would include affordable housing and retail space. Combined with The Ribbon, these three developments will bring additional affordable housing to the streetscape portion of the corridor in the next two years.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the realization of the Strategic Neighborhood Fund investments in East Warren/Cadieux” said Jermaine Ruffin, senior vice president of neighborhoods for Invest Detroit. “SNF funding has resulted in improvements to parks and streetscapes and brought about much-needed new businesses and affordable housing.  We are incredibly grateful to have wonderful partners, including the City of Detroit, East Warren Development Corporation and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to help us continue investing in Detroit neighborhoods.”

In 2019, the CEOs of seven corporations each pledged $5 million to one of seven SNF neighborhoods. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s Daniel J. Loepp pledged his company’s $5 million investment to the greater East Warren SNF neighborhood. That funding has helped to support The Ribbon and other key improvements in the area.

“Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan commends all the partners and stakeholders involved in creating a revitalized environment to do business, gather with family and friends and lead a healthier life in the East Warren/Cadieux neighborhood,” said Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “The vision for this area was a community where commerce and families can thrive and a safe space to gather and get active, and it is now realized through not only the extensive streetscape project’s completion but also a signal of new business blossoming in the neighborhood’s center.”

“The East Warren corridor has been in need of a capital infusion for many years. Thanks to the support of Blue Cross Blue Shield, we now have a protected bike lane, beautiful landscaping and we’re seeing vacant buildings being reactivated,” said Councilmember Latisha Johnson (Dist. 4). “It was great to see residents extremely engaged in determining the look and feel of the streetscape infrastructure.”

    Strong Community Support

East Warren Development Corporation has been the backbone of their community for nearly a decade and has worked hand in hand with the City of Detroit and Invest Detroit to spur many of the exciting new projects underway and coming soon, including a brand-new East Warren Public Market, to provide retail space for entrepreneurs, a small grocery store, office space and indoor space for their very popular Farmer’s Market.

“The neighborhoods of Morningside, East English Village, and Cornerstone Village have been hungry for new retail on this E. Warren corridor. We can think of no three businesses to complement the existing retail than add a new bookstore, bakery, and coffee shop,” said East Warren Development Corporation’s Executive Director, Joe Rashid. “We heard throughout the E. Warren Cadieux planning process that they wanted walkable businesses with space for the community to sit and congregate, and we are thrilled that all three have that component.”

  • SEPTEMBER 20, 2023 (DETROIT) – Craig’s Coffee, a Detroit coffee roastery and cafe in Midtown, celebrated its grand opening with Mayor Mike Duggan, City officials and community supporters today at their facility located at 412 Peterboro St. With an emphasis on product quality and sustainability, the establishment has set its sights on becoming a haven for coffee connoisseurs.

In 2014, California native and owner Craig Batory moved to Detroit with his partner after she enrolled in graduate school. While working as a freelance writer covering the coffee industry, Batory soon immersed himself in it firsthand. His solid foundation in coffee roasting, honed in his home state, coupled with his experience in digital marketing, positioned him for a dynamic entry into the industry.

In January 2020, Batory started roasting coffee beans in his basement. As the business grew, he expanded operations to a pop-up location at Coffeehaus in Detroit before landing in his current facility. Today, Craig’s Coffee features an array of international and locally sourced coffee beans from Brazil, Guatemala, Ethiopia and the Motor City. It also offers a variety of exotic loose-leaf teas and coffee-brewing products, all of which can be found in-store and online at www.craigs.coffee.

“My biggest priority is providing a good, delicious beverage for the customer that’s sourced sustainably,” said Batory, adding that he has direct relationships with the producers and farmers who grow his coffee beans.

Batory attributes a substantial portion of his achievements to the robust small business initiatives in Detroit, particularly the Motor City Match program. The program provided Batory with an $80,000 grant for building renovations and offered indispensable consultation services. These levels of support, he believes, would have been challenging to secure in his native California, serving as a testament to the thriving small business ecosystem Detroit has cultivated.

“I know for a fact it wouldn’t have been feasible because it’s way more expensive to start a business out there,” said Batory. “It just seemed it was a lot more opportunity, specifically in Detroit, for small businesses to grow.”

Craig’s Coffee intends to not only be a popular coffee spot, but also a community hub. Batory has plans to offer space for local businesses needing a place to kickstart their ventures. This gesture is his way of giving back, a nod to the opportunity he received at Coffeehaus.

“We’re so glad Motor City Match can support an entrepreneur like Craig, who has found opportunity here in Detroit and is going from roasting coffee beans in his basement to opening up a brick-and-mortar coffee shop,” said Duggan. “It’s clear Craig has developed a passion for the city and is committed to its people, as he plans to also use this space to help fellow Detroiters who have business ideas of their own.”

Botary contracted several Detroit suppliers and vendors to support his business. He hired Detroit-based construction firm, The Roy Company, to assist with the build-out of his space, partnered with Detroit artists for his custom coffee label designs and secured packaging from the Michigan Box Co. Botary adds that all packaging is eco-friendly and biodegradable, underscoring his commitment to sustainability.

“Craig’s Coffee embodies the essence of Detroit’s small business community — resilient, pioneering and deeply rooted in community values,” said Sean Gray, Vice President of Small Business Services at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, which manages Motor City Match. “We know Craig’s will evolve into a dynamic hub for both coffee enthusiasts and entrepreneurs.”
